SPC Flooring Thickness and Wear Layer: A Specification Guide
Compare SPC thickness, wear layer, IXPE backing and locking systems. Use Kermit collection options and a documented 6 mm example to specify the right floor.

SPC flooring thickness, wear-layer thickness and backing describe different parts of the product. Compare all three before deciding that one floor is a better fit than another. A thicker plank does not, by itself, establish its surface-wear performance, acoustic result or suitability for a particular room.
Start with the intended use and the available finished-floor height. Then specify the collection, decor, dimensions, wear layer, backing and locking system together. That gives the designer, supplier and installer the same product to work with.
Read the thicknesses separately
The overall thickness describes the plank's build-up. The wear layer is the transparent protective layer above the decorative film. Attached backing, such as IXPE, is a separate part of some configurations. Confirm whether a quoted overall thickness includes that backing; do not add or subtract it from a headline number without checking the product sheet.

A simple arithmetic example helps: a quotation that explicitly states a 5 mm plank plus a 1 mm backing describes a different thickness basis from one that states 5 mm including backing. These are examples of how to read a quotation, not named Kermit configurations.
Measure adjoining tiles, door clearances and transition profiles against the agreed installed build-up. Choosing a thicker plank cannot replace levelling an unsuitable base.
Compare the documented Kermit collection options
Kermit's Elegance, Sky, Elite, Mosaic and Travertine collection profiles list 5 / 6 / 7 mm thickness options, 0.30 / 0.50 mm wear-layer options and 1 / 1.5 mm attached IXPE options. Their listed formats are:

These are collection-level options, not confirmation that every combination is available for every decor. The order specification should select one combination and clarify the thickness basis. The same profiles list use classes 23 / 33; ask for the matching product document and any additional evidence your project requires.
Use the current catalogues and technical documents to shortlist a decor. Keep the sample code beside the technical description so a colour decision does not accidentally change the ordered construction.
A complete example: 6 mm SPC without attached IXPE
Kermit's 6 mm technical sheet, in Romanian, identifies a specific configuration: 6.00 mm overall thickness, 0.50 mm wear layer and no attached IXPE. Its nominal format is 228.6 × 1219.2 mm. This is a separate documented configuration; it should not be used to infer the backing of another collection.
The sheet records a density of 2,000 kg/m³ (2 g/cm³). Density is not a wear-layer thickness or a complete quality rating. The acoustic result is undeclared for this configuration, so a decibel figure from a backed product must not be transferred to it.
If this floor needs a separate underlay, agree the compatible assembly before ordering. Adding a soft layer simply to increase total thickness can change support beneath the locking joints. The installation guidance requires an underlay approved for the selected flooring and conditions.
Choose the wear layer through the use specification
A 0.50 mm wear layer is thicker than a 0.30 mm layer, but thickness alone does not establish a service life, scratch-proof surface or warranty duration. Record expected foot traffic, entrance dirt, furniture movement, castors and the cleaning routine. Then match those conditions to the selected product's use classification and supporting documents.
For a commercial project, request the actual performance evidence needed by the specification. Fire, slip, acoustic and other requirements are separate questions. A collection label or a single wear-layer number cannot answer all of them.
Room suitability still matters. Kermit's flooring guidance covers suitable indoor applications and advises against bathroom floors, outdoor use and areas cleaned by hosing. A technical specification should state those conditions alongside the dimensional values.
Give the installer a usable specification
Keep one approved record containing:
- Collection, decor code and retained sample reference.
- Width, length, overall thickness and whether that includes backing.
- Wear-layer thickness and attached or separate underlay details.
- Exact locking system and the applicable joining instructions.
- Intended room use, required performance evidence and document revision.
- Subfloor preparation, transitions and finished-height requirements.
For heated floors, add the heating system and surface-temperature controls described in the heating and sunlight guide. Use the installation planning checklist before approving the site for fitting. These checks connect the product selection to the floor that will actually be installed.
Common specification questions
Is thicker SPC flooring always the better choice?
No. Compare the complete construction, intended use, wear layer, joint system, approved backing and installation conditions. Extra thickness alone does not establish better acoustic performance, a longer warranty or suitability for an uneven subfloor.
Does every 6 mm Kermit floor include IXPE?
No. The published 6 mm technical sheet describes a product with a 0.50 mm wear layer and no attached IXPE. Other collection profiles list attached-backing options. Use the document for the exact product being ordered.
Can a wear-layer thickness tell me how many years the floor will last?
No. Wear-layer thickness is one specification field. Actual use, maintenance and the complete product matter, and warranty terms must be obtained for the selected order rather than inferred from a thickness figure.
